Jade plant soft leaves need a dry-versus-wet diagnosis

Soft jade plant leaves can mean the plant has used up stored water, or they can mean the roots are rotting and no longer supplying the leaves. The leaves alone cannot tell the difference.

Check the soil before you water. A dry gritty pot and a damp heavy pot both can produce soft leaves, but they need opposite responses.

Dry soft leaves often look wrinkled

When a jade is genuinely thirsty, the leaves may feel thinner, slightly wrinkled, and less firm while the soil is dry. A deep watering should gradually restore firmness.

After watering, let the mix dry again before the next drink. Jades store water well, so they do not need constantly moist soil.

Wet soft leaves warn of rot

If leaves are soft while the soil is wet, pause immediately. The roots may be failing, and more water can push rot into the stem.

Inspect the base and roots for mushy tissue. Save firm stems or leaves as cuttings if the lower plant is soft, and restart in a gritty, fast-draining mix.
