Heartleaf Philodendron brown spots

For vining heartleaf philodendrons, a scar on one leaf can follow handling while it was rolled. New silver scuffs, black specks, or distorted leaves warrant a pest check.

Inspect without pulling the leaf open

Examine already-open undersides, petioles, and the outside of the papery leaf sheath. Let new leaves unfurl naturally. Use the thrips guide if the pest and damage match.

Dry versus enlarging spots

Filter strong sun if exposed leaves developed fixed papery patches. Separate a plant with wet-looking expanding lesions and keep foliage dry. Check the root ball too if it wilts in wet mix; a leaf spot alone does not establish root rot.
