Water quality and dry-down rhythm work together
A calathea watered with mineral-heavy tap water may show white crust on the soil or pot rim before the leaf edges look worse. The same plant may also crisp if it is allowed to dry fully between waterings.
Switching to filtered, rain, or distilled water can help, but only if the potting mix also stays lightly and evenly moist. Cleaner water will not offset a root ball that repeatedly collapses dry.
