Calathea brown tips

Brown tips usually build after repeated small stresses. Separate dry air and salts from underwatering, wet roots, and pest damage.

For calathea, read this symptom alongside how the plant usually behaves: Calatheas curl and brown from dry soil, low humidity, mineral-sensitive water, heat, cold, or pests. They prefer steadier moisture than many common houseplants.

What to check

Look for white crust on the soil or pot rim.

Check whether tips worsen near vents, heaters, or hot glass.

Inspect whether new leaves are forming cleanly while old tips remain brown.

Check whether leaves curl during the day and relax later.

Inspect undersides for mites before blaming humidity alone.

Evergreen diagnosis

Calathea brown tips point to repeated small stress

Calathea tips brown easily, but the cause is usually cumulative rather than one bad day. Mineral-heavy water, uneven moisture, dry air, hot airflow, and mites can all show up first at the thinnest edge of the leaf.

The old brown tip will stay brown. The useful question is whether the newest leaves are opening clean and whether the brown line is widening after each watering cycle.

Water quality and dry-down rhythm work together

A calathea watered with mineral-heavy tap water may show white crust on the soil or pot rim before the leaf edges look worse. The same plant may also crisp if it is allowed to dry fully between waterings.

Switching to filtered, rain, or distilled water can help, but only if the potting mix also stays lightly and evenly moist. Cleaner water will not offset a root ball that repeatedly collapses dry.

Check the underside before calling it cosmetic

Fine pest damage can look like ordinary tip burn until the leaves turn dull and stippled. Calathea undersides give mites a protected place to feed, especially in warm rooms.

Use bright light along the midrib and leaf edges. If you find webbing or moving specks, handle pest pressure first. If the plant is pest-free and growing, trim only the dead tip edge and improve consistency.

Careful next steps for Calathea

  1. Step 1

Trim only dead brown tissue without cutting into healthy green tissue.

  2. Step 2

Water thoroughly in a draining pot instead of giving frequent small sips.

  3. Step 3

Move sensitive plants away from vents and harsh heat.

Why Is My Peace Lily Drooping?

Peace lilies droop from both dry soil and wet soil. The fix depends on pot weight, soil moisture, light, and whether the plant recently moved or was repotted.

Brown Spots vs Brown Tips

Brown tips are usually repeated stress at the leaf edge. Brown spots can point to scorch, pests, root problems, edema, or physical damage.
